Cougar Creations: (a semi-boring BYU update)

School has started, and it seems like about two weeks into the semester, things were in full swing and I was/am swamped. I love school, but I forget when it gets like this how hard it can be to juggle things.

I've mentioned this previously, but I am applying for the Graphic Design program at BYU this November, and I have to have a portfolio of my 10 best works.

The graphic design program at BYU is really competitive, it's graphic design program is being "recognized among the top schools in the country, including Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, School of Visual Arts in New York City, and Rhode Island School of Design in Providence" ...which all sounds rather daunting, but I have been working pretty hard, and hopefully it will pay off. They accept around 25-30 people/semester and I'm guessing they'll have well over 100 applicants this semester. Odds aren't great but it's worth trying!

So far I have a few projects I have made that I like and am considering submitting into my portfolio. I finished an abstract painting this weekend, and while I'm not 100% satisfied with it, I'm happy enough with it to just let it be (for now at least), it's really the first time I have attempted something like this so I have to just learn to let go and experiment with color and texture and the whole process without being too picky and hard on myself, otherwise I'll never finish anything.

I am also taking a 2D design class that I am really loving, it's a lot of tedious work but I just have loved learning about paper collage and color theory. Also, luckily for me my 2D professor is by far the most encouraging, positive, helpful person, I'm so glad I ended up in that class.

Without further ado, here is some of my art work...

My first attempt at an abstract painting:
(this one was put through instagram, the second is closer to the original color)

And this is my collage, made entirely out of tiny cut by hand pieces of paper. It was so uncharacteristic of me to enjoy such a tedious activity, but I totally loved the process:
(this is from a Matisse painting if you were wondering where you had seen it before..)
